I will give a brief opinon on who to watch out for in the Las Vegas Classic from the 4 American Qualifiers... Of course most know Big Daddy Darin young as he has played the last 6 Classics and last years World championships (plus 2 others) and the Grand Slam...probably Americas most natural shot and most experienced TV player so he can do some damage if the draw goes his way. Last year he made the top 8 I think... I know he made the 16 for sure. So Darin gets Kevin Painter...my bet?? go with Darin in this one... he scores better and has nothing to lose. I say 6-4 Darin. Kevin will be liking the draw but I think the confindence will be short lived. You have Bill Davis, last years underdog that beat John Part in the most exciting dart match of the World Championships but has struggled on stage often so he can go either way... He is coming off a good weekend last weekend so it will really come down to who he faces...if they give him the chance to settle he can get hot. Bill has drawn Barney... Barney is the bet here 6-1 Barney. Not much to really say the experience of Barney is just so vast that he will capitalize on any mistake by Bill. |

Well what can I say? I was worried about having to work and make the very early morning drive to Vegas Sunday and I got lucky as work was slow Saturday night and I got decent sleep. The drive was uneventful and I made it there nice and early...also got a good deal on my hotel....that is where most of the good news ends. I drew Mick McGowan in the first round of Sundays' qualifier, a solid shooter( I think he is about 38-40 in the world) but one that I have defeated in the 3 previous meeting but to be honest I was hoping for a bit softer start after my lack of performing the last few weeks. Well we all know how it went 5-4 Mick.. but the very good news was 8 out of the 9 legs were 15 darts or less and I missed in the 9th leg (156) to win it while Mick was on 96 and obviously he did not. I was happy that I was throwing well and the only double I missed was the 156 so it was not bad just no luck. So on to day 2 of qualifying.... |

Well I am back home and getting ready to head to Vegas this weekend to try and qualify for the Las Vegas Classic but I need to update people on what happen this weekend. The shoot itself was well ran and held in a great venue literally walking distant from the Burbank Airport ( Suburb of LA) so that part was great... The issue for the shoot was it was not well attended at all. I think this was due to a few reasons, one that they held it on short notice- this hurt it as it really should be a destination event for American darters. The second was it was held Thurs- Sunday and with the short notice people just can not make travel/work plans to attend so I hope Manny will stay involved but give the American/world players more notice for the next one. As for the darts the level was high and it turned out to be a great weekend for my doubles partner Dan Olson (from Canada) as he won the main event 501 singles and finished second in the Cricket singles bringing home around 6500US dollars for the weekend. As for me? Well I had no luck.... my run of missing doubles continues and I am trying to stay positive about it and know it will turn around but.... It has been a long few weeks for me since Boston where it all started. I had the same issue in the UK Open and now the Pacqiuao shoot. I am throwing really smooth but just can not get the double to go in it seems. I lost the 501 with having 18 darts across the 3 legs I lost to win and at least 3 in the other events... so needless to say a lot of practice is being put in for Vegas this week. |

Well it is just over 24 hours away from the start of my bid for a spot in the Las Vegas Classic and I am a bit worried ;) ..... Since I am working a 24hr shift here at the firehouse. Here in Phoenix, we run both fire and medicals in the fire dept....actually it is about 85% medical and very rare a actual fire. The worry comes from that I was going to fly up early in the morning but I had a friend who wanted to come along so we were going to drive the 4-5 hour trip early in the am and I would sleep. Well now they are not going and I will need to leave here at 430 am to make sure I am there in time....the issue is I may be doing it with no sleep. You never know if you get sleep at work but then to make that drive and play?? I am tired just thinking about it now. But what can you do? |

Well by now all know the score of my first match in the UK Open...6-5 to the wrong guy....and now for the rest of the story........ I wish I could say I had gone into the Open full of confidence and ready to play...but I didn't. I had not been throwing much and after last weekends dissmal finishing my confidence was shakey to say the least. I had some good practice sessions and figured I would be ok as long as I got by the first guy and got back into the swing of things. It had been two months since I played at that level and it showed...as I was more nervous during my match then I normally get. The Open is definitely a different tournament. The crowd is loud and right on top of you while you play.... when playing a local as I was they are mostly againist you. In fact, two people were removed by security during my match for poor conduct...I will say that I never heard what the crowd said unless it was a cheer for me so they never bothered me but it is too bad that people want to do those things to players. During Paul Nicholson's second match the crowd was just plain mean....it is more then ok to cheer for your guy but don't be jeering the other guy while he is throwing.... |
